OptiU® for granular urea

Solid urea is the most widely used nitrogen source in agriculture. Its affinity to absorb moisture frequently leads to lump formation during storage, and its high solubility reduces the critical relative humidity (CRH) of any bulk blend it enters, making handling, storage, and blending with other fertiliser grades difficult and costly.

Crommelin AgriCoatings OptiU® is a non-toxic, non-hazardous, biodegradable liquid coating that forms a barrier film on the urea surface, significantly reducing its tendency to cake and improving its compatibility in bulk blends.

What OptiU® Does

Prevents lump formation as coated urea remains free-flowing in humid bulk storage and when bagged under pressure

Improves bulk-blend compatibility, enabling urea-phosphate blending without lowering the blend’s critical relative humidity

Acts as a carrier for additional compounds, including humates, nano particles of sulphur, zinc oxide, and copper oxide

Sets within 60–90 seconds with no drying, curing, or additional process steps required

The barrier film does not wear off or become less active over time

Application

OptiU® is applied in any standard fertiliser blending or mixing facility by spraying or dribbling the coating onto urea in a mixer or blender. No capital outlay for specialised equipment is required. The coating is not sticky, does not cause build-up on equipment, and can be applied in humid conditions. Coated urea can be dispatched, bagged, or blended directly after the single-step coating process.

Technology

Most existing urea coatings are focused on nitrogen release rate, moisture uptake management, sulphur addition, or humate inclusion. None of these addresses the core handling and blending limitations of solid urea.

OptiU® is specifically formulated as a barrier coating to lower urea’s affinity to form lumps and to raise its CRH tolerance in blends, a technically distinct objective from all other current coating approaches for this substrate. It is the first commercially available coating in the world to achieve this in a simple, single-step ambient-temperature process.
